Most Affordable Colleges for Middle-Income Families

Middle-income families often fall between the cracks: too much income for the largest need-based grants, too little to pay full price. This ranking looks at the average net price for students whose families earn $48,000 to $75,000, which is where many generous financial aid policies make the biggest difference.

We compared 1,536 four-year colleges with at least 500 undergraduates that report a value for this bracket and list the best 50. The median net price for this income group is $16,981, and the lowest is $226. The 50th school sits at $5,373, and University of Chicago ranks first. California leads by state with 11 schools. The overall median net price for the same schools is $19,463.

The bracket figure is an average across aided students at each school, so your own offer can differ. Treat this list as a shortlist for further research and compare actual aid offers side by side before committing.

Compare this ranking with the low-income list on this site: schools that rank well in both usually have broad aid budgets, while schools that rank well in only one tend to target specific groups.
